Start by downloading Gemini 2 (don’t worry—it’s free!). Then it will do all the hard work for you, and you can clean out all those duplicate photos that are sucking up your storage space.

How to Delete Duplicate Photos on Mac With Gemini 2

While the Gemini 2 app will do most of the work for you, there are a few steps you’ll need to follow when using this app. Before you launch it, though, spend a few minutes thinking about where you have your pictures. Are they in your Home folder or are they in your Photos app?

Gemini 2 will naturally select the Home folder. If you want to switch the default to your Photos app, you will need to do the following:

• Launch Gemini 2
• Click the “restart now” button
• When you see the “+” button appear, select it
• Click the Photos app option
• Press the “scan for duplicates” button

After this, Gemini will only scan your Photos app for duplicates. If you store your photos in multiple different places, you may have to run the scan a few times in each spot. Or you can take the time to move all your photos to one place before you start.

This might take a few extra minutes, so be prepared to spend some time on this step. If all your photos are already organized how you want them, you can go ahead and begin the scan!

Scan for Duplicates

Now that you’re ready to find all those pesky duplicates, all you have to do is press the “scan” button. The process might take a few minutes (depending on the number of photos you have), so don’t expect immediate results. That said, it should be fairly quick.

Review Photos

When the scan finishes, you’ll be able to review all the duplicate photos it found. You can either preview these on the Gemini app, or if you need to close the app for some reason, you can find them again under “All Duplicates” then “Images.”

Here’s a pro tip: you can switch to grid view when going through the duplicate photos. This will make the files bigger, which will make it easier to see what you’re looking at. Because of this, you can go through the photos much faster.

Select the Photos You Want to Delete

You might not want to delete all the duplicate photos Gemini 2 finds. Before you simply click the “delete” button, make sure you save at least one copy of the duplicate photos. Otherwise, you won’t have anything left to capture the memory.

As you scroll through the duplicate photos, you can select the ones you want to delete. If you don’t want to keep any of them, then go ahead and select them all.

Delete the Duplicates

Once you have everything selected, all you have to do is press the “Smart Cleanup” button. This will move all the duplicate photos you marked to an album called “Gemini Duplicates.”

You can now go into this album and take one last look at your duplicate photos. If you’re sure you want to delete them, you can find and press the delete button from this folder.

Make sure you double-check your photos, though! If you want to keep a copy of an image, it’s worth making sure you have one before you delete the duplicates. After you press delete, there is no going back, and you don’t want to lose something precious to you.

It’s a good idea to take your time on this step. Rushing through the process may cause you to lose something you would have wanted to keep.
