Best Islands to Visit in Florida

Popular islands to vacation in Florida include Key West, Marco Island, Amelia Island, Siesta Key, and Sanibel Island. Below we briefly describe each island and some fun activities to explore.

Key West

Nothing is more synonymous with the Florida Keys than its prized island, Key West. Home to an assortment of famous bars including Captain Tony’s and Sloppy Joe’s, Key West has its own distinct culture.

The island is known as the Conch Republic. One of the most well-known attractions on the island is visiting the southernmost point of the United States. This point is honored by an iconic monument, which has become one of the most photographed locations in the state.

Key West was also the home of legendary author, Ernest Hemingway. History buffs can tour the Hemingway Home and learn about Hemingway’s unprecedented career.

Marco Island

Marco Island is a beautiful island right near Naples, Florida. Full of sunny beaches and comfortable resorts, Marco Island is a favorite getaway for Florida residents and tourists.

The island is home to Keewaydin Island, Tigertail Beach, South Marco Beach, and Frank E. Mackle Park. The island also has its own historical museum.

 Amelia Island

Amelia Island is one of the northmost barrier islands in the state. It is an island in the Sea Islands Chain. The island is home to Fernandina Beach, Fort Clinch State Park, and Amelia Island State Park.

Siesta Key

Siesta Key is a popular island on the Gulf Coast near Sarasota, Florida. Known for its beautiful and quiet beaches, Siesta Key is a great getaway without extensive crowds. The beaches do get quite busy on weekends or holidays, however.

Siesta Key is home to Siesta Beach, Crescent Beach, Turtle Beach, and the famous Point of Rocks.

Sanibel Island

Sanibel Island is another breathtaking island on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Located near Fort Meyers, the island is recognized for its iconic lighthouse and for being a great destination for shell collecting.

Sanibel Island is home to J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Reserve, Bowman’s Beach, and The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum.

Honorable Mention: Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale is the classic home of spring break. It was immortalized in the 1960’s teen film, Where The Boys Are. Though it is not its own separate island, Fort Lauderdale is one of the most popular beach destinations in the state.

A favorite activity among tourists is taking private boat tours. Boat tours allow you to enjoy the gorgeous views that only Fort Lauderdale can provide while relaxing with family or friends.
